James Guthrie (Nevada)
James Guthrie was the Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction from April 2, 2012 until his resignation on March 29, 2013. Guthrie did not explain why he chose to leave the office, stating, “All I can say is I’m resigning, effective immediately.I just cannot tell you (the reason)."[1][2]
Biography
Guthrie is founder and chairman of the board of Management Analysis & Planning, Inc. (MAP), a private sector management consulting firm specializing in public finance, organizational studies, and litigation support, located in Davis, California. He is the founder and president of Class Act Partners (CAP), a corporation specializing in the printed and electronic provision of research based materials for education professionals.[3]
Previously, Guthrie was a public school science teacher and then a professor and Graduate School of Education Dean at the University of California, Berkeley for 27 years.[3]

Guthrie undertook postdoctoral study in public finance at Harvard. He also was a postdoctoral fellow at Oxford Brookes College, Oxford, England, and the Irving R. Melbo Visiting Professor at the University of Southern California.[3]
Political career
Superintendent of Public Instruction (2012-2013)
Guthrie was the Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction for just under a year. He served in this position from April 2, 2012 to March 29, 2013.[4][5]
Appointments
2012
Guthrie was appointed as Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction by Gov. Brian Sandoval (R) on March 12, 2012. Guthrie took office on April 2, 2012. The appointment marked the first time a Governor filled the position. Previously, the state board of education had made the appointments.
Sandoval stated, “After the passage of education reform in the last legislative session, for Nevada to have access to a figure with a national reputation is the perfect next step. I am honored and thrilled Dr. Guthrie has agreed to help lead Nevada as we continue strengthening education in our great state.” [6]
