Candidate Connection

James Herrold completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey in 2019. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Herrold's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

I will focus on reducing taxes, reducing spending, and reducing the size and scope of municipal government.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am passionate about anything that increases individual liberty, for example reducing taxes and removing burdensome regulations.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I admire anyone who leads by example. I true to do that in the leadership roles in my own life.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

If you want to understand my political Philosophy, I would recommend reading "Free to Choose" by Milton Friedman or "The Law" by Frederic Bastiat.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

I think it's important for elected officials to realize they can't run other people's lives better than those people can. I believe in limited government, natural rights, and personal responsibility. These are my principles, and I will always adhere to them.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I have a broad, general understanding of how government works and many different areas. I have high integrity and am very principled.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

The core responsibilities of Lincoln Nebraska City Council member are make sure the citizens of the city are free to create a healthy economic environment and a safe place to live, work, and worship. That includes supporting ordinances and resolutions that protect property rights and provide recourse for those whose rights have been violated.

What legacy would you like to leave?

As part of my legacy, I would like people to realize that when I'm done with serving in a public office, I was able to operate with integrity, without compromising my principles, and was able to make the city of Lincoln a better place to live.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

I remember the images and some of the news from the first Gulf War. I was about six years old at the time.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I grew up on a farm, so my first job was working in fields and on the farm. My first job in high school was working at a John Deere implement, and I was there about two years.

What happened on your most awkward date?

It's been a long time since I've dated. My wife and I have been together since we were 17. I can't think of too many awkward moments.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Christmas is my favorite holiday. We celebrate the birth of Christ. There are renewed calls for peace and to treat each other with goodwill.

What is your favorite book? Why?

My favorite fiction book is "Lord of the Flies" and my favorite non-fiction author is Dr. Thomas Sowell (it's hard to name just one of his books as a favorite!).

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Atticus Finch. I don't know if I would want to be in his situation, but I would like to be able to say I behaved the way he did when faced with adversity. I want to be able to say I did the right thing regardless of public opinion.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

My kitchen. I really enjoy cooking for my friends and family.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

"Separate Ways" by Journey.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

I like to read, but I'm a slow reader, so I take my time, but it takes me longer than most to get through it. I'm also not a great speller.

Are there any little-known powers or responsibilities held by this office that you believe more people should be aware of?

This body can help hold the line on taxes and lower taxes in more ways than one. A majority (along with the mayor) can set rates, but it requires a super majority to raise taxes higher than set levels (as provided by statute). It also requires a super majority to override a mayor's veto.

What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?

I have the ability to listen and sympathize with others. I have the ability to work collaboratively with others. And I have the resolve to hold true to my principles. And I believe those are important for this office and other offices.

What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the local government?

As a council member, you have the ability to influence local legislation, grant and recommend appointment-ships, waivers, and licenses. The body only consists of seven members.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?

I believe it might be helpful, but I definitely don't think it's necessary.
