James D. Hovey is a judge for the Southeast Judicial District in North Dakota. He was appointed by Governor John Hoeven on October 20, 2010, and took the oath of office on December 17, 2010.[1][2]

Hovey was elected to the remaining two years of the term he was appointed to after running unopposed on November 4, 2014.[3][4] He won re-election to a new six-year term in 2016.

Hovey received a B.A. degree from the University of North Dakota, an M.A. from the University of Arizona and a J.D. from the University of North Dakota School of Law. Prior to his judicial election, Hovey primarily spent his legal career in private practice. He has also served as city attorney for Larimore.[1]
