James Hovey appointed to District Court
October 20, 2010
Grand Forks, North Dakota: Attorney James Hovey has been appointed by Gov. Hoeven to the North Dakota Southeast Judicial District court in New Rockford. Hovey will replace the late Judge James M. Bekken as District Court judge. He will hold this position until the next general election in two years, when he will face a retention election.
Prior to this judicial appointment, Hovey worked as a lawyer for the firm of Pearson, Christensen & Clapp, beginning in 1996. He has also worked as a Larimore City Attorney, has taught at the University of North Dakota Center of Legal Studies, and is a former president of the Greater Grand Forks County Bar Association. Regarding his new job, he stated, "“My judicial philosophy, I guess, would have to be: First, you apply the law. Whether you like the law or not, you apply the law.”
Governor Hoeven lauded the new judge in a news release. “James brings a wealth of legal experience to this judgeship, both as a litigator and mediator, and will do an outstanding job for the citizens of the Southeast Judicial District,” he said.[1]
UPDATE: Hovey was sworn-in to office on December 17, 2010.[2]
