James Jones is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia. He joined the court in 1996 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton (D). He was the chief judge of the court from 2004 to 2010. Jones assumed senior status on August 30, 2021.[1][2]

Jones was a judge on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. He was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts on May 19, 2015. Jones' term expired on May 18, 2022.[3]

Biography

Education

Born in Tampa, Florida, Jones graduated with a bachelor's degree from Duke University in 1962. Jones then received his J.D. degree in 1965 from the University of Virginia School of Law.[2]

Professional career

Jones was an assistant attorney general for the Commonwealth of Virginia from 1965 to 1966 in the Virginia Attorney General's Office primarily representing the State in criminal appeals. In 1966, Jones was a law clerk in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, VA, for former Appeals Judge Clement Haynsworth and served in that capacity until 1968. Jones entered private practice in Abingdon, VA from 1968 to 1983.[2]

In 1983, Jones was elected a State Senator for the Virginia State Senate. While in the Virginia Senate, Jones served on the Committee for Courts of Justice and the Virginia Code Commission.[2]

In 1990, Jones was appointed by Governor Douglas Miller to the Virginia State Board of Education and served as the Board’s President from 1992 until 1996.[2]

Judicial career

Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (2015-2022)

In March 2015, Chief Justice John Roberts appointed Jones to the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. Jones began a seven-year term on May 19, 2015. Jones replaced James Zagel on the court.[4]

Western District of Virginia (1996-2021)

On the recommendation of Virginia U.S. Senator Chuck Robb, Jones was nominated to the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia by President Bill Clinton on December 12, 1995, to a seat vacated by James Michael as Michael assumed senior status. Jones was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 18, 1996, and received commission on August 1, 1996. Jones served as the court's chief judge from 2004 to 2010.[5]

Jones assumed senior status on August 30, 2021.[1]
