An effort to recall Mayor James Knowles in Ferguson, Missouri, from his position was launched in March 2015.[1] The recall did not go to a vote because supporters failed to gather enough signatures.[2]

One of the petitioners, Nick Kasoff, said, "It’s like he’s pulling random things out of thin air and making Ferguson look ridiculous." In addition, Knowles was blamed for the firing of five city employees following a report by the U.S. Department of Justice.[1]

Supporters needed to collect 1,828 signatures within 60 days in order to move the recall forward.[3] Petitioners presented about 2,200 signatures to the city council at a meeting on May 26, 2015.[4] 1,125 of them were struck down for a variety of issues, meaning petitioners only collected about 1,100 valid signatures.[2]

Petitioners later turned in more signatures, but still fell 27 short. Robert Hudgins, a former city council member, filed suit in July 2015. He alleged that 28 signatures were improperly thrown out, so the recall should still go forward.[5]
