Campaign themes

2016

Leiman's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Economic Growth and Prosperity

  • Improve Greater Minnesota’s economic situation by expanding and adequately funding programs for business growth and development.
  • Increase transportation funding for small communities and counties.
  • Restructure state government to more effectively support Greater MN.
  • Improve State government support to business through innovative and automated services and streamlining of processes.

Education

  • We need to invest more in our kids! Especially in STEM programs so that we can be competitive in a global 21st Century environment. I will sponsor legislation investing more in STEM programs right away. There is room in the budget to accomplish this now!

Sustainability

  • Enhance the economic and regulatory environment for agriculture by reducing burdensome environmental regulations on farmers and preserving land ownership rights; focus on a fair solution for the Buffer Law.
  • Adjust the Local Government Assistance (LGA) formula so that agricultural counties such as Norman so that it isn’t punished for high land values.

Flood Mitigation and Infrastructure Investment

  • Expedite funding for flood protection as no communities should have to wait almost 20 years following a traumatic flood for protection.
  • Fight for projects such as the Moorhead underpass and Detroit Lakes wastewater plant- it shouldn't take decades for Western MN to benefit from projects that are paid for by their taxes.

Cut Taxes and Enforce Government Accountability

  • Cut State income taxes for lower and middle income earners by recouping revenue losses through freezes for every department for five years and force government accountability.
  • Ensure that agricultural property owners are taxed fairly and redirect existing taxes to fund transportation projects as opposed to creating a new gas tax.[1]
