James Letoa was a candidate for the Trustee Area 2 seat on the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education in California. He ran against three fellow candidates in the general election on November 4, 2014.[1] James Letoa lost the general election on November 4, 2014.

Letoa ran unsuccessfully for the Trustee Area 1 seat on the Elk Grove Unified Board of Education in 2012.

Letoa is a parent and a classroom educator and has experience working with special needs students. He has served on the English learner advisory committee, the superintendent’s parent advisory committee, the school site council and the district’s finance committee.[2]

Three seats on the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. No incumbent filed to run for re-election in Trustee Area 2, leaving the race to four candidates: Nicholas Aaron Webster, James Letoa, Tim Gorsulowsky and Crystal Martinez-Alire. Martinez-Alire won the seat. In Trustee Area 4, incumbent Bobbie Singh-Allen ran unopposed and won re-election by default. Elizabeth Marie Albiani, candidate for Trustee Area 5, also ran unopposed and won election to the board by default.

Funding

The Sacramento County Voter Registration and Elections Office does not publish and freely disclose school board candidate campaign finance reports. Ballotpedia staffers directly requested this information, but the municipal office refused those requests to make that information public.[3]

Endorsements

Letoa received endorsements from the California School Employees Association (CSEA) Chapter 831, the community organization Evolve and current Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education members Carmine Forcina and Steve Ly.[4][5] He also received endorsements from other school board members and community leaders. Letoa highlighted the following priorities on his campaign website:

Putting kids first and putting teachers at the head of the classroom

Promoting fiscal responsibility, transparency and clear accountability which includes the school board and top administrators be committed to understanding how public education money is spent and ensuring money is spent effectively and responsibly.

Create a unified school district through collaboration between community,parents,teachers. Encourging open communication. Working collaboratively we can leverage resources and expertise to benefit all students.

Raising awarness cyberbullies, and teaching our children that silence, when others are being hurt is not acceptable. Keep our kids safe.
