James M. McGuire was a judge on the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department. He was elected to the State Supreme Court, 11th Judicial District, in November 2004, effective the following January. He was appointed to the Appellate Division by Governor George Pataki in 2008.[1][2] He resigned his position on the Appellate Division in June 2011, citing the fact that New York state judges had not been given a pay raise for 12 years as the reason for his resignation.[3]

Education

Judge McGuire was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in Long Island, New York. He received a B.A. degree in philosophy from Fordham College in 1975 and a J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1980.[2]

Career

After law school, Judge McGuire worked at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. In September 1985, he joined the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom, LLP, as a litigation associate. Two years later, he began working as deputy counsel to the New York State Commission on Government Integrity. He served on this commission until July 1989, when he became a senior member of the New York County District Attorney's prosecutorial staff. In 1995, he was named first assistant counsel to Governor Pataki, and in 1997, he became the Governor's chief legal adviser. In 2003, he began working as counsel to the law firm White & Case, LLP. He held this position until his election to the Supreme Court in 2004.[2]
