James Marlar

James Marlar was the Chief Judge for the United States bankruptcy court, District of Arizona. He was appointed to the bench in December 1993, with his primary duty station in Tucson, Arizona. In December 2007 he was reappointed for a second 14-year term and he became Chief Judge on June 29, 2009 succeeding Judge Redfield T. Baum. He was appointed by U.S. District Court Chief Judge John Roll to serve a four-year term as Chief. [1] He was succeeded on the court by Brenda Moody Whinery in 2013.[2]

Education

Judge Marlar graduated from Stanford University in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in history and later graduated from the University of Arizona College of Law with his J.D. in 1970.[3][1]

Career

Judge Marlar served on the Ninth Circuit's Bankruptcy Appellate Panel from 1999 until 2006 and continues to serve as Judge Pro Tempore. He practiced in the areas of bankruptcy and commercial litigation in Phoenix, Arizona for 23 years.[1]
