James W. McCarthy is a justice for the Oswego County Supreme Court in the 5th Judicial District of New York. He was elected on November 3, 2009 after running on the Republican, Democratic, Independence and Conservative party lines. He was sworn in on January 3, 2010[1] and will serve a 14-year term, expiring in 2024.[2]

Education

McCarthy was born in Syracuse, New York. After graduating from the State University of New York, College of Oswego in 1970, he joined the Army. After three years, he was honorably discharged and began attending Union University, Albany Law School. He graduated with a J.D. in 1977.[3][4]

Career

McCarthy worked as an associate attorney of the John E. Cullinan Law Firm in 1978 and 1979. From 1978 to 1983, he worked as an assistant Oswego City Attorney and from 1983 to 1987 as an Oswego City Attorney. He then judged on the Oswego City Court until 1992. During this time, he also worked as an attorney for the Law Offices of James W. McCarthy (1979-1992). In 1993, he joined the Oswego County Court, where he served until his election to the Supreme Court of the State of New York, 5th District in 2009. Prior to his election to the Supreme Court, McCarthy had also served as an acting Supreme Court judge since 1997.[5][3][4]

2009 election

McCarthy ran for the Supreme Court of the State of New York while he was an Oswego County Court Judge and acting Supreme Court Justice. Three candidates competed for two seats.[6]
