James Milkey
James R. Milkey was a judge of the Massachusetts Appeals Court. He assumed office on April 8, 2009. He left office on September 3, 2024.
Milkey retired from the Massachusetts Appeals Court on September 3, 2024.[1]
Education
Milkey earned his A.B. from Harvard College in 1978 and his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1983. The same year, he earned a master's degree in city planning from M.I.T.[2]
Career
After law school, Milkey clerked for Justice Benjamin Kaplan of the Massachusetts Appeals Court from 1983 to 1984. He then joined the environmental protection division of the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office, and became chief of that division in 1996, where he worked until his appointment to the Massachusetts Appeals Court in 2009. Milkey served as a visiting associate professor at Pace Law School in New York and co-taught a class at Harvard Law School.[2]

- 2008: Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions award for outstanding public service
- 2007: Named one of Lawyers USA's 10 Lawyers of the Year
- 2007: American Bar Association Award for Distinguished Achievement in Environmental Law and Policy
- 2006: Public Servant of the Year award, Environmental League of Massachusetts
- 2003-2005: Co-chair, Environmental Law Section of the Boston Bar Association, 2003-2005[2]
