James Phares is the former West Virginia Superintendent of Schools. His term began on January 2, 2013 and he announced his retirement from the position in April 2014.[1][2]

Phares came to the role of West Virginia Superintendent of Schools with nearly 40 years of experience working in education. Phares has served in various roles - classroom teacher, university instructor, principal, assistant principal and county superintendent. Pharoes was an adjunct professor at WVU and Lynchburg College and served 14 years as a county superintendent.[1]

Phares is the former West Virginia Superintendent of Schools. His term began on January 2, 2013 and he left office on June 30, 2014.[3]

The day he was sworn in Phares stated, "by the end of the day today, we’ll have a 30 day chart of plans. It’s the things that we do first and we’ll be prepared to share that with the board as we go on. We hope to rebuild trust, we hope to rebuild communications and we hope to be open and transparent with everything that we do.”[4]

Phares was appointed as the 28th West Virginia Superintendent of Schools by the West Virginia Board of Education on December 12, 2012.[5]
