James Richman is a judge for Division 2 of the California 1st District Court of Appeal. He assumed office in 2006. His current term ends on January 6, 2031.
Richman ran for re-election for the Division 2 judge of the California 1st District Court of Appeal. He won in the retention election on November 6, 2018.
He was appointed to the court by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and was retained by voters in 2006.[1]
Education
Richman earned his undergraduate degree from the University of San Francisco and his J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1965.[2]
Career
After law school, Richman was a law clerk for First District Court of Appeal Judge Raymond Sullivan. He spent the next year as an assistant professor at Gonzaga University School of Law. He joined the law firm now known as Cooley Godward LLP in 1967 and became a partner in 1972. Richman did commercial and probate litigation with the firm until his 1996 appointment to the Alameda County Superior Court. From 1972 to 1997, Richman also taught evidence, torts, and civil procedure as an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law. He was a superior court judge until his appointment to the First District Court of Appeal in 2006.[2]
