James Robert Redford is a judge for the 3rd District of the Michigan Court of Appeals. He assumed office in 2018. His current term ends on January 1, 2029.

Redford ran for re-election for the 3rd District judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals. He won in the general election on November 8, 2022.

Redford was a judge for the 17th Circuit Court in Kent County, Michigan from 2003 to 2015. He was elected on November 5, 2002, and took office on January 1, 2003.[1][2] He was re-elected on November 2, 2010.[3] In December 2014, Redford was appointed to be Michigan's chief legal counsel. He resigned from the court and began his new position on January 14, 2015.[4]

Education

Redford graduated with a B.S. in business administration from John Carroll University in 1982. He received his J.D. degree from the University of Detroit in 1985.[5][2]

Military service

Redford served for five years on active duty in the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the U.S. Navy. He then served in the Navy Reserves for 23 years.[2][6]

Career

Prior to joining the bench in 2003, Redford served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Michigan for eight years. He also practiced law with the law firm of Plunkett & Cooney. He worked there as a partner until he joined the circuit court in 2003.[2][8]

Redford ran for election to the Michigan Supreme Court. He was defeated in the general election on November 4, 2014, after receiving 20.1 percent of the vote. He competed against Brian Zahra, Richard Bernstein, William B. Murphy, and Doug Dern for two open seats. Redford was nominated as a candidate at the Republican convention.[10] 

2010

Redford was re-elected to the circuit court (along with George Buth and Paul Denenfeld) in the general election on November 2, 2010. He received 33.73 percent of the vote.[3]
