James Smart
James M. Smart, Jr. was a judge on the Western District of the Missouri Court of Appeals. He was appointed to this position in December of 1991 and retained by voters in November of 1994.[1] He retired on February 15, 2013.[2]
Education
Judge Smart was born in Mexia, Texas. He earned an A.B. degree from the College of William and Mary in 1966 and a J.D. degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia School of Law in 1969. He is now married and has two children.[1]
Career
Judge Smart began his legal career in 1969 as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Jackson County. In 1970, he joined the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps and he worked as a military judge in 1973 and 1974. After this, he ran a private law practice until his appointment to the Court of Appeals in 1991.[1]
