James Verellen
James Verellen was a judge for District 1 of the Washington Court of Appeals Division I. He assumed office on November 1, 2012. He left office on July 31, 2022.
Verellen ran for re-election for the District 1 judge of the Washington Court of Appeals Division I. He won in the general election on November 2, 2021.
Verellen retired on July 31, 2022.[1]
Education
Verellen graduated from Washington State University in 1973 with a degree in political science. He earned his J.D. from Willamette University College of Law in 1976.[2]
Career
Before taking the bench, Verellen worked as a mediator, arbitrator, and consultant for Judicial Dispute Resolution, LLC. He also previously served as a commissioner for Division I of the Court of Appeals for nearly 20 years. In that capacity, Verellen decided motions for discretionary review, emergency motions, motions on the merits, and other matters. Prior to becoming commissioner, he spent 14 years as an attorney in private practice. Verellen worked as a law clerk for Judge Vernon Pearson in Division II of the Court of Appeals immediately after law school.[3]
