James Waylon Counts

James Waylon Counts was the chief judge of the Twelfth Judicial District of New Mexico.[1] Counts was appointed to the bench in 1999 and won election the following year. He was retained in 2008 and 2014.[2] He left office on October 30, 2020.[3]

Counts was retained to the 12th District Court with 78.5 percent of the vote on November 4, 2014. [4]

Education
Counts received both his undergraduate degree and J.D. from the University of New Mexico.[2]
Career
Prior to his appointment to the bench, Counts served as an assistant district attorney and worked in private practice.[2]

- 2006: New Mexico Bar Association's Outstanding Judicial Service Award[2]
Court of appeals bid
Counts was one of seven applicants to be considered to fill the vacancy on the New Mexico Court of Appeals.
The vacancy on the court was left by Judge Robert Robles, who agreed to step down June 1, 2011 after pleading guilty to a drunken driving offense.[5]
