James J. Wechsler was a judge on the New Mexico Court of Appeals. He was appointed by Democratic Governor Bruce King and joined the court in December 1994.[1] He was retained by voters in 2006 and again in 2014 for a term that was set to expire on December 31, 2022.[2]

Wechsler retired before the end of his term on July 31, 2017.[3]

Education

Wechsler graduated from New York University in 1966 with a B.S. in accounting and business. He received his J.D. from the same school in 1969.[1]

Career

Wechsler began his legal career as a legal services attorney. From 1976 to 1983, he worked as an assistant attorney general. He then worked as a private practice lawyer until his appointment to the court of appeals in 1994.[1]

Elections

2014

Wechsler was retained to the New Mexico Court of Appeals with 73.2 percent of the vote on November 4, 2014. [2]

2006

Wechsler was retained to the court of appeals in 2006, receiving 77% of the vote.[4]

New Mexico voted for the Democratic candidate in six out of the seven presidential elections between 2000 and 2024.

Pivot Counties (2016)

Ballotpedia identified 206 counties that voted for Donald Trump (R) in 2016 after voting for Barack Obama (D) in 2008 and 2012. Collectively, Trump won these Pivot Counties by more than 580,000 votes. Of these 206 counties, three are located in New Mexico, accounting for 1.46 percent of the total pivot counties.[5]

Pivot Counties (2020)

In 2020, Ballotpedia re-examined the 206 Pivot Counties to view their voting patterns following that year's presidential election. Ballotpedia defined those won by Trump won as Retained Pivot Counties and those won by Joe Biden (D) as Boomerang Pivot Counties. Nationwide, there were 181 Retained Pivot Counties and 25 Boomerang Pivot Counties. New Mexico had three Retained Pivot Counties, 1.66 percent of all Retained Pivot Counties.
