Campaign themes

2018

Lake Country Now surveyed the school board candidates. Below are Wood's responses:[9]

What do you see as the biggest issue facing your district?

Unfortunately, the hottest topic these days is the safety of our schools. The community of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida believed "...it will never happen here." Once again, unarmed students and faculty were left to run, hide and fight.[10]

—James Wood[9]

How would you address that issue?

I believe our schools need to have comprehensive physical security where all perimeter entries have door contacts, local alarms and surveillance cameras. In addition, should the state allow for the local communities to decide if they want registered conceal carry in public buildings. I would support the measure in our schools.[10]

—James Wood[9]

2016

Wood provided the following responses to questions about the 2016 election to Lake Country Now:

What do you think is the most important issue currently facing the school district?
I believe the development of a strategic plan to upgrade and maintain the facilities throughout the district is the most important issue facing the district. I have reached out and joined the OASD's Facilities Advisory Committee in effort to see firsthand the need for the identified improvements.

What do you foresee as the biggest future challenge for the school district?
Oconomowoc is a wonderful area and word is getting out. As identified by MDRoffers Consulting report, OASD's student population is poised to grow by 544 students. I view these as conservative estimates. We need to plan for the immediate needs today as well as scale for the growth of tomorrow.

What differentiates you from your opponents?
I see myself as a very good listener. I don't bring agendas or preconceived opinions to the position. We need to consider all stakeholders in this community; students, educators, families with/ without children and make good decisions using OASD's vision/values that will assist in churning out great assets to our community.
