Jamie Kalani English
Jamie Kalani English (Democratic Party) was a member of the Hawaii State Senate, representing District 7. He assumed office in 2000. He left office on May 1, 2021.
English (Democratic Party) won re-election to the Hawaii State Senate to represent District 7 outright after the general election on November 6, 2018, was canceled.
English served as the state Senate majority leader from 2015 to 2021.[1]
Before joining the state Senate, English served on the Maui County Council from 1997 to 2000.
English announced on April 27, 2021, that he would retire from the Senate due to long-term symptoms of COVID-19, which he contracted in November 2020.[2] His retirement was effective May 1, 2021.[3]
Biography
Education
English earned a certificate from the Center for Public and Business Administration Education at National Chengchi University in 1988, a B.A. in Pacific Islands studies from Hawaii Loa College in 1989, and a certificate from the Institute of Culture and Communications at East-West Center in 1991. He also earned an M.A. in Pacific Islands studies from the University of Hawaii in 1995 and his paralegal certificate from Maui Community College in 1996.[4]

The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 3, 2014. Incumbent J. Kalani English was unopposed in the Democratic primary and was unchallenged in the general election.[5][6][7]

English won re-election in the 2012 election for Hawaii State Senate District 7. English defeated Barbara Haliniak in the August 11 Democratic primary and defeated Kanohowailuku Helm (I) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[8][9]

2008
On November 4, 2008, English was re-elected to the Hawaii State Senate from Hawaii's 6th Senate District. English received 14,030 votes in the election, defeating John Blumer-Buell (I), who received 3,653 votes. Additionally, 2,171 "Blank" votes and 3 "Over" votes were cast in the election.[10] English raised for his campaign $92,664; Blumer-Buell raised $7,475.[11]
