Mees retired from her role as a media specialist at Hickman High School in 2006. She worked as a librarian and media specialist in several different schools before her retirement. Mees obtained a bachelor's degree from Purdue University. She went on to earn a master's degree in library science from the University of Missouri.[1]

Two of the seven at-large seats on the Columbia Public Schools school board were up for general election on April 5, 2016. Incumbents Jan Mees and James Whitt defeated challengers Paul Rainsberger, Sarah Dubbert, and Joseph Toepke to win additional terms.[2][3]
