Biography

Jane Hamilton was born in Louisiana. She earned a bachelor's degree from Lake Forest College in 2000. Her career experience includes working as a campaign manager and as the chief of staff of U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey (D). She also worked as an adviser on Pres. Joe Biden's (D) Texas campaign in 2020.^[1]

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Jane Hope Hamilton began her legislative career as an aide to Representative Helen Giddings in the Texas State House. Soon thereafter, she continued her policy work in Washington, DC on the U.S. House Rules Committee and the U.S. House Democratic Caucus. Years later, Hamilton returned to Congress as a Chief of Staff to Congressman Marc Veasey. Hamilton has served on some of the most impactful and victorious campaigns in Texas. She led the campaign that flipped Dallas County from Republican to Democratic, electing the first African American District Attorney in Texas. Most recently, Hamilton served as the Texas Statewide Director during the Presidential Primary which led to Joe Biden clinching the Democratic Nomination. She also served as a Senior Advisor during the general election. Hamilton is the founder of the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute, a nonprofit organization that provides a comprehensive approach to community-based leadership in action. Before running for Congress, Hamilton was a General Manager at Noodle, a company that specializes in building online programs for colleges and universities. Hamilton has served as a Board Member of; Annie's List, Deeds Not Words & Dallas County Citizens Election Advisory Committee. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

After the Texas State Legislative Session of 2011, I sued the Governor of Texas twice - and won, to protect our voting rights. As Chief of Staff, I helped form the first-ever Congressional Voting Rights Caucus whose members are on the frontlines of the fight today. When elected to Congress, I will lead in the fight to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
My fight for police reform and criminal justice reform is personal. As a victim of police brutality, I will fight for the passage of the George Floyd Act.
With 27 billion of federal funding in infrastructure alone, coming to Texas, my experience will help ensure that jobs and economic opportunities are available to communities of Congressional District 30, especially to those historically marginalized and underserved. I will use my relationships with elected officials, community stakeholders, community organizations, and business leaders to ensure that equity is prioritized in the disbursement of federal funds.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

We need to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and implement strong election policies that protect our Democracy. We need to pass the George Floyd Act and create meaningful policies that eliminate systemic racism in our law enforcement agencies and court systems. We need to implement stronger hospital protocols and policies with the sole purpose of lowering the disproportionately high numbers of maternal mortality among African American women. I will push for the creation of policies that support Congresswoman Underwood’s Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act (HR 959). We need to continue to implement policies that create economic opportunities and equity for underserved and historically marginalized communities of color.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Barbara Jordan was one of the most compelling leaders in the history of our great Nation. She was a defender of the Constitution and believed in “America’s promise,” which meant equality and justice for all. She was a national leader around our country’s most pressing issues: jobs with livable wages, quality healthcare for all as a “right and not a privilege,” and voting rights. Barbara Jordan is a true American hero and our country is blessed to have benefited from her public service.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

Amend The fight for America - This docu-series serves as a valuable opportunity to learn more about the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It explores the history of discrimination in the United States as well as the fight for freedom and equality for African Americans.

What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?

We must save our Democracy. In the absence of pre-clearance, which was voided when Section 4 was struck down nullifying Section 5, this left states that had a history of discriminating against people of color free to pass legislation that disenfranchised minorities across this country. Unfortunately, Texas tops this list. We must pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect our voting rights and save our Democracy.

Criminal Justice Reform & Policing Reform

The criminal justice system is clearly broken. Too many people are in prison and jail as a result of the criminalization of poverty and not for public safety. In Congress, Jane will work to:

Direct funding to diversion and re-entry services in order to reduce the likelihood of people encountering the criminal justice system in the first place or once they have completed their sentence.

Eliminate the use of cash bail, as no one should be imprisoned because they do not have the means to pay to get out.

Give judges more sentencing discretion by eliminating federal mandatory minimums.

Increase accountability of law enforcement agencies and support the George Floyd Act.

Health Care

Healthcare is a human right. Too many of our family members and communities are uninsured and underinsured. In Congress, Jane will work to:

Demand Healthcare for ALL so no one is left without access to healthcare and work to include dental, vision, reproductive, maternity and mental health services.

Expand Medicaid in order to close the healthcare gap for those who are unable to access care because of Texas’ refusal to expand Medicaid.

Make hospitals, clinics and physicians more accessible by investing in transportation infrastructure so that everyone can be treated quickly.

Massive investment in access to broadband to make telemedicine more accessible.

Invest in the crucial scientific research needed to cure diseases and save lives.

Voting Rights

For far too long, our state and country has denied our community the fundamental right to vote, as well as our right to free and fair elections. It’s time that our government takes a stand. In Congress, Jane will work to:

Put an end to discriminatory voter ID and voter suppression tactics.

Support for the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

Support for the For the People Act

Make Election Day a Federal Holiday

Ensure voting rights are restored for the formerly incarcerated immediately upon serving their time. This right must be restored regardless of whether they are on supervised release or unsupervised release.

Education

As a parent, Jane is strongly in support of a massive reinvestment in our public schools ensuring a world class education for all our children regardless of zip code. In Congress, Jane will work to:

Make state schools, trade schools, and community colleges affordable and accessible while also ensuring equity in admissions criteria.

Obtain pay increases for our teachers, because their quality of life directly impacts our children’s education.

Establish a safe environment for all children regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or gender identity, disability, or immigration status, so that all students are free from discrimination, intimidation and bullying while in school.

Seniors

After decades of work and contribution to our community, our seniors deserve to live out their “Golden Years” free from worry. We must ensure our seniors receive the benefits they have worked their whole lives to access. In Congress, Jane will work to:

Protect and strengthen the Social Security Program so the retirement of our seniors is secure.

Ensure that Medicare continues to serve our seniors in the most effective way possible without jeopardizing quality of care.

Lower prescription drug prices so no seniors have to forgo their medications in order to afford other basic necessities.

Environmental Justice

For too long the price of our vibrant economy has been environmental harm that is borne disproportionately by our poorest and most vulnerable residents. In Congress, Jane will work to:

Secure access to clean air and water, as these are human rights that should be enjoyed by everyone.

Ensure that we are investing in green jobs and technologies that will create new economic opportunities.
