I am an ophthalmologist in private practice. I am married to Philip Hughes, MD, a dermatologist, and we have three grown children, Elizabeth Hughes, MD, Dermatology; Alexander Hughes, MD, Ortho Spine Surgeon: Audrey Hughes Barrett, MBA, JD, USAA Corporate Development Team. Two of our grandchildren are currently in the middle school and high school in Alamo Heights. Our third just graduated and is a freshman at UT Austin. I became a mentor for two different groups in the AHHS Incubator Program and got a first hand feel for the high school having committed to every other Thursday morning 2019 and 2020. I was elected twice as a trustee on the Northside Independent School District Board, where I chaired the academics and finance committees prior to moving to Alamo Heights 22 years ago. I have both experience and skills to bring to the AHISD school board, and will commit to better reflecting the expectations of the community and improving transparency and collaboration.
- Parents as Partners. The Board and Administrators should provide full transparency and easy access to information regarding school curriculum and other issues affecting the community.
- The Board as a Bridge. The Board serves at the behest of the constituents & translates their academic/environment expectation to the administration.
- Academics, not political agendas. Our children are not a captive audience for groups promoting adult agendas other than academic.
I am passionate about promoting a disciplined learning environment that offers rigorous and appropriate instruction for each student regardless of their baseline skill levels. This is a full time endeavor. Recent in-service training that focused on a sociopolitical agenda was not consistent with recent legislation and the Governor's declaration, and in my opinion it was also inappropriate when our students have lost the equivalent of a full year of school. The priority should be focused remediation for all students and strategies to accomplish this without falling further behind. Our school district is generally academically very strong, but all students have suffered over the past two years which shifts focus to a rescue plan as well as continued academic excellence.
My father is deceased, but I would have to say my father. He was the City Editor of the Fargo Forum while I was growing up, and he went on to become the Information Director for the US Foreign Agricultural Service. He was a humble but straightforward person with a kind and generous heart and a sharp wit and inquisitive mind. Our dinner conversations were a daily highlight, and we were up on everything going on in North Dakota before a lot of the population. When I came home from college we would sit up until all hours debating the "new" ideas I had acquired in college. What I wouldn't give for just one more conversation! When I was faced with difficult decisions I would ask myself what my dad would think of my choices or actions. i believe that helped me make many correct decisions when it would have been easy to equivocate.
I am academically focused, a researcher, a hard worker, I feel the burden of the trust parents place in the schools when they enroll their children, and I am willing to accept the responsibility of leadership to the best of my ability.
Serving as a Trustee involves a commitment to study all issues to be brought before the board. This encompasses new programs, fiscal issues, grant proposals, facility expansions, academic considerations, the budget, and state and federal laws and regulations. It takes a lot of time and effort to be an effective and informed Board member. If all members do their homework, the discussions that take place in the open school board meetings will not only be pertinent to the topics at hand, but they will be educational for the attendees.
I would like to be remember for stepping up to the plate when the need arose.
I graduated from high school when I was 17 and was crushed I could not get the lifeguard and swimming instructor job because you had to be 18. So, that first summer out of high school I got a job as a waitress in a busy hotel dining room. I had NO experience with a job much less as a waitress. I was the only part time employee and about 30 years younger than the rest of the crew. Fortunately, they were all very helpful and supportive. What a life lesson. It is extremely demanding physically, socially, and organizationally to be a good waitstaff. I lasted the entire summer and when I came home on vacations I would stop by. My only regret was I gained a little weight because the "pie lady" would always save a piece of pie for me at the end of my shift.
"A Gentleman in Moscow " by Amor Towles This was a brilliantly constructed novel with a unique premise. It was filled with such detailed descriptions and character development that it was impossible not to feel you had climbed right into the book. A close second is "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr. I am in awe of their command of the language and their insight into human beings.

The Board serves as a bridge between the community and the school administration. Constituents presumably elect candidates whose academic expectations and understanding of the role of the school closely resembles their own. The job of the board is to then select or continue to employ the superintendent who is charged with implementing and overseeing policies and practices consistent with that academic and role philosophy. The secondary, and one could argue equally important role, is to ensure that the school district maintains fiscally sound practices in all areas.
Our school district is smaller than many urban school districts which has greatly facilitated much community support and enthusiasm. There is currently a wonderful network of parents, business people, and organizations that interface with the schools. One prime example is the Incubator Program in the high school. Alamo Heights was one of only 120 high schools in the nation to get the grant to start this unique program. I have been a mentor for two years and individuals from all walks of life have volunteered time, talent, and treasure to support these high school students and their innovative business ideas. I would continue to embrace and build on existing relationships and groups with recognition and notifications for involvement opportunities.
One of my four platform pillars is: Parents as Partners. This means that there should be absolute transparency regarding what is being taught, programs that are in place, and plans for major changes. Parents should feel comfortable bringing praise or concerns to teachers, administrators, or the Board if issues cannot be resolved or if they require broader discussion. By encouraging active participation at Board meetings by publicizing topics on the agenda and encouraging signing up to speak if a parent wants to weigh in, we can strengthen the bond between parents and the schools, and promote trust in the schools.
