Jane Poston owns J2 Media, a 22-year video production and communications company, in partnership with her husband Jason. Together, they have raised a family and built their business in Chandler, while devoting time to supporting their community through service. As a small business owner who grew up in the East Valley, Jane has experienced the enormous growth of Arizona, and managed and grown her successful small business through times of both prosperity and national crisis.

As a former city employee she has worked hand-in-hand with every department and possesses a strong understanding of the workings of municipal government from the inside out, including the budget, economic development, Mayor & Council and community events. In short, she understands how government works, and which questions to ask. She is an advocate for fiscal responsibility, government transparency, communication and responsiveness.

Jane's community experience includes: Chandler Chamber Board Chair (2021), and Women in Leadership Chair, 2021 Citizens Bond Committee (Airport), Chandler Education Foundation Board President, East Valley JCC Board, CUSD Bond & Override Marketing Chair, Arizona Center for the Blind & Visually Imparied, and pro bono work for Chandler Firefighter Charities, AZCEND, ACEE, and Fans Across America among others. She hopes to apply her business experience to develop a creative and innovative vision of what Chandler can be.

  • The most critical issue facing the city is public safety hiring. While Chandler is a safe city, we must ensure that public safety has the staffing, training, and resources they need. The staffing shortages didn’t happen overnight, and the solution won’t either. Chandler needs a well-considered plan for the future to attract qualified, professional staff. Recruitment and retention efforts are a priority.
  • Chandler needs to continue to be a fiscally responsible steward of the taxpayer dollar when it comes to maintaining the quality-of-life services that attract businesses and residents alike. I will work closely with my colleagues on the Council, our residents and the City’s department and division staff to outline goals and objectives to address these issues.
  • I am in support of implementing protection for our LGBTQ community, which I believe is long overdue. The City put off passing a Non-Discrimination Ordinance (NDO), and I will work to get it approved. Through my work at the Chamber and as a small business owner, I have been an active supporter of an NDO and, unfortunately, Chandler has failed to act on this important issue, despite the strong recommendation from the business community. I feel passing the NDO is not only the right thing to do for our community, but also it will place Chandler in a great position to continue to attract high quality businesses and send a powerful message to both private and public employees. The passing of an NDO would send a strong message to our businesses a
As a professional communicator, I understand the power of the tools we use to inform and educate the public. And how they can be implemented in a way that discourages public input. For example, holding meetings on important issues at inconvenient locations or at a time of day when most residents are at work. Or failing to use the tools easily available, like streaming video, or proactively communicating through social media. Chandler historically has been a leader in garnering public input, for instance taking budget issues out to the community rather than requiring residents to come to us. When Council is making some of its most important decisions around the annual budget, at the very least, those hearings should be streamed online. City staff and facilities are already in place to make that happen. There’s no reason that we aren’t making that information easily available to the public online. None of this is nefarious. It's just disappointing. Especially as someone who thinks residents' opinions are the most important ones.As a former city employee, it was my job to ensure that our residents received honest, open and truthful communications in a timely manner. Throughout my tenure with the city, I was an advocate for government transparency and communication. .I'm committed to ensuring that residents are heard through open and transparent communication, and a process that meets residents' needs, not just what is convenient for elected officials.
I believe municipal government is unique in that it's the closest to the residents it serves. People who live in Chandler can get a real person on the phone, or hear directly from their Councilmembers about issues important to their homes, neighborhoods and community. City government has a direct effect on people, and it's where residents can effect change.
I believe it is incredibly important to have an understanding of city government and the responsibilities of the office, and I believe my previous experience as a city employee will allow me to hit the ground running. It's also important to understand how the Manager /Mayor form of government works in that the Council sets the vision and the City Manager oversees staff, which implements the day-to-day operations. Overstepping those bounds can lead to confusion and difficulty for employees, Council and the residents. Additionally, having an understanding of the budget process, which is the major responsibility of Council is critical.
Fiscal responsibility, which I have demonstrated through successfully running a business over the last 22 years, and the ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders in the community as well as other Councilmembers.
