Career
Timken earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1989 and a J.D. from American University in 1994. She worked as an associate at the law firm of Black, McCuskey, Souers & Arbaugh in Canton, Ohio, from 1992 to 2002. She went on to serve as a magistrate in the Court of Common Pleas in Stark County, Ohio, from 2002 to 2007.[3]
Community and nonprofit activity
In 2008, Timken became the board chair of ArtsinStark, a community nonprofit organization that aims to support the arts in Stark County, Ohio. She remained with ArtsinStark until 2010.[3][4]
Timken became the chairwoman of Kent State University in 2012, where she remained until 2014.[3]
Political activity
Republican Party of Ohio
In response to Republican electoral losses in 2006 and 2008 as well as the subsequent passage of the Affordable Care Act, Timken increased her involvement in the Republican Party of Ohio (Ohio GOP) and was elected vice chairwoman in May 2010.[5]
"I decided I need to get more involved and help recruit more candidates and be more active in raising funds and be more active with the party organization," said Timken. "I just felt we were becoming a regulatory state and that needed to stop."[5]
She continued to serve as vice chairwoman until 2017, during which time she also served as a delegate for Mitt Romney at the 2012 Republican National Convention. In January 2017, Timken was elected to a two-year term as chairwoman of the Ohio GOP. She succeeded former state party chairman Matt Borges, who had faced criticism from fellow Republicans for what they considered to be his lukewarm support of Donald Trump's (R) 2016 presidential campaign.[3][5][6]
Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
