An effort in Huber Heights, Ohio, to recall City Councilwoman Janell Smith was initiated in July 2018. Petitioners submitted enough signatures to move the recall forward, and the Huber Heights City Council voted to put the recall on the ballot.[1]
Recall vote
The recall election was held on November 6, 2018. Janell Smith was recalled from office. Unofficial results showed 57.5 percent of votes approving the recall and 42.5 percent of votes against the recall.[2]
Recall supporters
Recall organizers argued that, during a debate over a water pressure project, Smith withheld crucial information from the rest of city council that could have affected the approval of $2.4 million of taxpayer money.[1]
Recall opponents
Smith responded to the recall effort, saying, "Let's cut to the chase with what this recall is really about. I am a strong-willed woman who is being discriminated against and persecuted because I ask tough questions, and expect accountability in a heavily guarded gold old boys network, where there is no room for strong-will women won't fall in line."[3]

Huber Heights Ward 2 United for a Better Tomorrow PAC organized the recall effort The group was required to submit signatures equal to 15 percent of the total number of votes cast in Ward 2 in the last gubernatorial election. The ordinance passed by the Huber Heights City Council putting the recall on the ballot was scheduled to take effect 30 days after approval. The date of the recall election was put into question because the Montgomery County Board of Elections requires notification of a recall 60 days before an election.[1]
