Dr. Janet Barresi is running for the Republican nomination in the Fifth Congressional District of Oklahoma. Barresi is the only announced Republican who has successfully run and won a statewide office. Barresi ran a successful dental practice for over 24 years. After her husband's death in 2009, Janet and one of her sons assumed control of Cosmo Energy, which today is a thriving oil and gas company. In 2011, Barresi became the first Republican elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Under her leadership, Barresi improved reading scores using phonics-based instruction and raised achievement for many of the worst performing schools. Barresi led in the effort to bring transparency and accountability in reporting for everything from academic performance to expenditures of state and federal tax dollars. She oversaw a State Department of Education budget that averaged over a $2.7 billion dollar average yearly. While serving as Superintendent, Barresi presided over the Oklahoma Career and Technology System that is widely recognized as the best system in the country. When she left office, Oklahoma Career and Technology programs included 110 Industry Certifications that offered tuition-free training in various fields including construction, cyber security and in aero-space for high school juniors and seniors.
  • I come to the campaign with 40 years of experience being a healthcare professional, business owner, and only Republican candidate who, has won an election for and, held a statewide office.
  • Our values are under assault by radical Washington liberals. I will stand up for our second amendment rights, support pro-life issues, support President Trump and help create solutions to the out of control healthcare cost. There is no getting around it, today's Socialist Democrat Party is trying to fundamentally change our great nation.  I've taken on the liberal establishment, and I've got the scars to prove it.  I know what it takes to stand up for Oklahoma values.
  • We need principled conservative fighters ready to make the case for freedom and defeat the radical left in Congress. We can't settle for just any Republican. I believe that I'm the most qualified candidate to, on day one, be able to sit down and face off against Nancy Pelosi, AOC, and socialist liberals.
Border Security and Immigration - A country without strong borders and a lawful immigration system cannot thrive. We have all seen the tragic images of the dangerous crossings and the abandoned, abused and exploited children. Janet's position is clear: build the wall, give US Border Patrol and ICE the resources they need to do their jobs, ban Sanctuary Cities, and close loopholes in current law that incentivize the coyotes who traffic women and children across our southern border.

Second Amendment - The right to bear arms is a fundamental right guaranteed by our constitution. Janet is a proud member of the NRA and will defend our Second Amendment rights from liberals who seek to take our guns.
Right to Life - Janet believes that we must protect all innocent life, including unborn babies. She believes life begins at conception and understands that any country that permits late-term abortions and infanticide is not just. She will fight for every child's right to reach their God-given potential.
Taxes - Janet supports the tax cuts passed by Republicans in Congress and signed into law. She will vote to make the tax cuts permanent. Washington has enough money. They just spend too much.

Healthcare - As a dentist, understands the importance of the doctor-patient relationship. She will oppose the Democrats' attempts to give the federal government even more control over patients' medical decisions and fight to restore healthcare freedom.

Political career

Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction (2011-2015)

Barresi served as Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction from 2011 to 2015. She supported the original implementation of the Common Core education initiative in Oklahoma. She also supported charter schools by working to increase funding for scholarship programs.[4] At the end of her tenure, however, Barresi's position on Common Core shifted, as explained on her campaign website:

I strongly support higher academic standards. At one time, as it was emerging from Republican and conservative ideas from individual states, I did support Common Core. However, as it has become entangled with federal government, it has become too difficult and inflexible. There’s no disputing that Common Core and the debate surrounding it have become a distraction to raising standards. Whether the standards in question are Common Core or another set, what is important is creating and implementing standards that truly prepare our children so they attain their dreams. I have never wavered in my support of greater rigor. The clock is ticking on each and every child in Oklahoma classrooms, and we must press forward to make Oklahoma’s public schools the best they can be.[5]
