Janet Coit

Janet Coit was the Rhode Island Director of Environmental Management.[1] Coit assumed office in January 2011 after being appointed by former Gov. Lincoln Chafee.[2] She resigned from office on June 18, 2021 after being selected to lead the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's fisheries office.[3]
Biography
Before joining the Department of Environmental Management, Coit worked for 10 years at The Nature Conservancy, one of the world's leading environmental nonprofits. She served as that organization's Rhode Island state director, where she oversaw some of Rhode Island's largest land conservation projects. Prior to joining The Nature Conservancy, she was counsel and environmental coordinator in the Providence office of the late state senator John Chafee and, subsequently, then-state senator Lincoln Chafee.

Coit was appointed as Rhode Island Director of Environmental Management by Gov. Lincoln Chafee (I) on November 30, 2010.
Chafee stated, “Janet, with more than 20 years of experience working on environmental issues, is fully qualified to lead that effort. She understands, as I do, that smart, sound economic growth and environmental stewardship are not mutually exclusive."[5]
