Mitchell has worked as a school counselor for 16 years. She attended the University of Kansas, receiving a Master's degree in Elementary Counseling.[1]

Mitchell ran for election in the 2012 election for Kansas House of Representatives District 56. Mitchell defeated LaVern Abney in the August 7 Republican primary and was defeated by Virgil Weigel (D) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[2][3]
