Janet L. Stumbo was a judge on the Kentucky Court of Appeals, representing the 7th Appellate District, Division 2. She was first elected to the court in 1989 and served until 1993. She was the first woman from the 7th Appellate District to be elected to the Kentucky Court of Appeals. In 1993 she was elected to the Kentucky Supreme Court, where she served until 2004. She was the first woman elected to the Kentucky Supreme Court.[1]

Stumbo was elected to the Kentucky Court of Appeals for a second time in November 2006 and took the bench on January 1, 2007.[1] She was re-elected in 2014 for another eight-year term that would have expired on January 1, 2023.  She was a 2015 candidate for the Kentucky Supreme Court.

She retired from the bench at the end of 2017.[2]

Education

Stumbo is a native of Floyd County, Kentucky. She received her bachelor's degree from Morehead State University and her J.D. from the University of Kentucky College of Law.[1]

Career

Stumbo began her legal career as a staff attorney for an appellate judge. In 1982, she joined the law firm of Turner, Hall & Stumbo, PSC and focused on workers' compensation, federal black lung claims, dissolution of marriage and personal injury cases. Stumbo served as an assistant attorney for Floyd County for three years. From 1983 to 1989, she served on the board of directors of the Appalachian Research and Defense Fund of Kentucky. In 1989, before her first election to the Kentucky Court of Appeals, she joined the law firm of Stumbo, DeRossett & Pillersdorf. Stumbo was elected to the Supreme Court of Kentucky in 1993 and served there until 2004. She then taught at Appalachian School of Law and the University of Kentucky College of Law and taught a mock trial course for high school students until her second election to the Kentucky Court of Appeals in 2006.[1]

2012

Stumbo was defeated for a seat on the Kentucky Supreme Court by incumbent Justice Will T. Scott in the November 6, 2012, general election. She received 41.9 percent of the vote. She previously served on the Kentucky Supreme Court from 1993 to 2004.[4][5]

On April 24, 2012, it was announced that Stumbo had earned the endorsement of the United Mine Workers of America, a powerful group in the district in which she sought election.[5]

In 2004, Stumbo lost her bid for re-election to the Kentucky Supreme Court.
