Career
Webster is the daughter of John and Betty Gray, Oregon philanthropists who donated to organizations and causes related to "early childhood, geography and environmental education." After John and Betty passed away, their children started the Gray Family Foundation as a way to "support John and Betty Gray’s faith in the human spirit through giving back to the systems that nurture all of us – our culture, our natural environment and our communities."[1][2]
After earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago in 1975, Webster returned to Oregon, where she worked as a handweaver, a partner at a boat works company, and then as an art gallery consultant before moving to New York City to pursue a master's degree in library science at Columbia University. In 1987, she came back to the West Coast to work with the Vancouver (Washington) Community Library. She joined the staff of the Hatfield Marine Science Center Library (later renamed the Guin Library) in 1989 and served as the head librarian until her retirement in 2015.[3]
