As as a mom of two young boys and a PTA President I have worked with our school to bring families together throughout the year, creating new memories and advocating for our students; while also showing our appreciation for the teachers, support staff, and administrators who work hard for our children

As a registered nurse I was a compassionate advocate for my patients at a time when they are the most vulnerable. I had to make quick decisions under pressure and stress.

These skills are valuable on the Board of Education to….

  • Advocate for policies and funding that support our schools in giving our students what they need to succeed.

  • Ensure parents and students have the information they need to understand their resources and choices.

  • Foster access to education that meets the student where they are and supports their goals.

  • Collaborate for innovative ideas to attract and retain qualified teachers, support staff, and administration.

And make sure the we communicate with the whole county to meet the unique needs of each district.

My name is Janie Monier and I am counting on your vote on Primary Day, May 14th!
  • We must work with local and state stakeholders to fully fund our public education system. Frederick County is unique in Maryland as the fastest growing county and a school infrastructure in need of expansion and renovation. Teachers are leaving the county because they cannot afford to live and work here. To give all our students the education the education they deserve we must provide them spaces to learn and staff to teach them.
  • What it means to work and live has radically changed over the last twenty years. The scope of what it means to succeed has widened far beyond the traditional high school and straight to college track. Our Career & Technical Center needs to expand beyond its one campus and have greater collaboration with the CTE programs in our public schools. CTC and CTE provide fruitful careers for students who are not going to college. The LYNX program is another resource for expanding the scope of what is possible for our students by providing our students opportunities to be inspired by post-secondary career options.
  • The pandemic may seem a thing of the past, but our students and families are still struggling with its impact. This includes the mental health and behavior of our students, and food and housing security for families and educators and staff. Understaffing and overcrowding have meant that students do not get the help they need until there is a crisis. Funding renovation and building of new schools; fully staffing by attracting educators and staff with competitive salaries, advocating for affordable housing, transportation, and childcare; and universal meals in school is a start. Next, providing families with access to services they need and making sure students have multiple avenues to future success will set our students up for success.
Changing the funding formula for our public schools so we can provide the spaces and staff our students need and deserve to succeed. Blueprint has many wonderful ideas that were mandated before covid when our fiscal outlook was different. In our current fiscal climate, we must be clear on what is actionable now and what will require innovative ideas in funding to get done so we can meet the promise of Blueprint.
I remember when the AIDS crisis was unfolding, and we did not even know what to call this new virus. As a child I was not afraid of it. I did, however, pick up that many adults were afraid. And their fear often caused them to lash out, blame, and ostracize people they did not know or understand. While I was only 5 or 6 years old at the time and most of the labels being thrown about were not something I understood, I was old enough to understand they were wrong. A virus does not discriminate. People do. And we do not arrive at helpful solutions when we are fearful.

When Ryan White, a child with hemophilia, contracted HIV from an infected blood transfusion, he was able to articulate the damage the stigma of the disease had on himself and his family. It took the innocence of a child facing their mortality to educate the adults on their humanity. To remind everyone how we are stronger when we work towards solutions together, collaborating and communicating with one another, instead of fighting and dividing out of fear.
To be an advocate for our public schools by collaborating with the students, their families, educators, school staff, and the community. Every aspect of a community is reflected in the local school, even if someone may not have a child enrolled. The health, wealth, and values of a community are told through the schools we build, the staff we hire, resources we provide, and the multiple touchstones between community organizations and businesses and our schools. Through careful, deliberate, and frequent collaboration a school board can maintain and draft policies that best supports the community and the goals for its future.
