An effort in Compton, California, to recall City Councilwoman Janna Zurita from her position was launched in 2017. The recall effort did not go to a vote because organizers did not submit enough signatures by September 2017 to require an election.[1]
Recall supporters
Recall organizers offered the following reasons for seeking Zurita's removal on the Recall Janna Zurita website:
“ |
Councilwoman Janna Zurita has been deceiving residents in Compton since the day she filed to run for office. She does not live in District 1 with her parents as she claims but rather in District 3 in a home that she bought through the City’s First time Homebuyer’s Program. Councilwoman Zurita continues to bully not only residents and City staff but her colleagues as well. She has publicly berated and disrespected the City Treasurer, City Attorney, City Manager and others during public council meetings. Councilwoman Zurita is an active member of the Bradley-Zurita Crime Family.
She’s never presented a single new program, policy, partnership or funding to the city to improve her district or the city–and her annual breast cancer awareness event doesn’t count. That event–while noble in cause–is mainly used to prop up her and her sister and used for photo opps. Councilwoman Zurita’s unethical behaviors include her continually violating the Brown Act by speaking with multiple council members prior to voting on contracts that benefit her personal interests. She’s been drunk in public places, used profanity in council meetings, and gave a senior the middle finger on the dais. She continues to openly disrespect and hate on Latinos in public council meetings. Councilwoman Zurita has repeatedly spoke against fixing Compton streets and continues to try and block moving forward on fixing the streets under the guise of looking out for the people even though the people voted for and passed Measure P because they want their streets fixed. Councilwoman Zurita spoke against the White Sox investing in Compton’s Jackie Robinson Stadium. Councilwoman Zurita voted against $6 million in grant funding offered by Volunteers of America. Councilwoman Zurita voted against salary reform and after her salary was reduced to $600 per month, she ordered the city manager to hire her niece to be her assistant. However her niece is a full time student during the day. She had her niece working in her restaurant while being paid with city funds.[2][3] |

Recall opponents
Zurita's public statement to District 1 residents following the conclusion of the recall effort included the following excerpt:
“ |
You saw through the unfair, unwise and unwarranted recall effort because the citizens of Compton know a con job when they see one. The voters, volunteers and residents of the First District know I have worked hard to protect their interests, improve their neighborhoods, create jobs and grow the City’s economy. The thousands of voters who refused to sign the Recall Petition chose real leadership over chicanery and real dedication over phony promises and someone they know really loves our city, over the forces who just want to take advantage of them.[1][3] |
