What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
Criminal justice reform, reduction of property taxes, implementation of ballot initiatives.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I personally am passionate about reforming how our criminal justice system handles drug offenses and sets individuals up for failure. Currently, almost 73% of parole violations that return individuals to prison are drug and alcohol related. This indicates we aren't treating the addictions that are at the root of why these people land in prison in the first place.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty and accessibility
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
An intense curiosity about the underlying reasons for the issues we face that is a direct result of my work as a research scientist.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first real job was as a dishwasher at a small locally owned restaurant in high school. I worked there for about 4 years and when I left I had learned how to perform almost every job necessary to the restaurant from food prep to waiting tables and organizing functions.
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Christmas. For my entire life, it has been the one holiday where every member of my extended family comes back together to one place, if only for two days.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No. In our current climate, there are far too many politicians that become too entrenched in their position and turn politics not into a service to their constituents, but into a career itself.
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
We have pension liabilities that are going to slowly creep up on us until one bad year will be all it takes to turn into a crisis.
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes. I am a firm believer in the idea that principles should come before parties, and the greatest way to put principles first is to caucus not on party lines but rather on issues of importance.
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
If an opportunity presented itself, I would run for US Congress or Senate. I don't believe, however, that that would be the best opportunity to make a difference for my friends, family, and peers here in New Hampshire.
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
As a volunteer for an organization that helped formerly homeless individuals find and keep housing, I met one man that had spent most of his year sleeping in the back of a pizza restaurant. One day, when he came back at the end of the day with a dog someone had abandoned, he was told he could either get rid of the dog or find somewhere else to sleep. He chose to find somewhere else to sleep. He wasn't willing to give up the dog because he had found something else to care for. His story showed me that even in the absolute worst of situations, people will find something to hold on to that gives them hope or purpose.
