I'm a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Financial Risk Manager who believes that the purpose of government is to keep society moving forward. I was taught from a young age that all people should be secure in their needs as human beings, and work towards that end. Life has taught me that there is no way around every system going to equilibrium, and that must always be understood. Finally, I'm a person who believes a problem can't be solved unless you know what the problem truly is.
  • Progressive Pragmatism
  • Tell Me How You Think About This
  • Liberty Can Only Be Achieved When We Meet Our Needs
I am extremely passionate about the interplay among the free market, regulation and behavior. To this end, each of these can be used to improve the justness of society while maintaining the tenets that have caused our economy to become the most powerful in the world. The Georgia economy plays a large part in our place in the world and there's no reason why we cannot play a bigger part, leading the way in just growth, technological advancement and lifting everyone's standard of living.

Additionally, the need for financial literacy remains a necessity for all adults and teens. Financial literacy could have helped stave off the Great Recession as it would have helped people see the corrupt practices of the financial predators. It also is imperative so that decisions with the proper risk/reward can be made by all people. The free market demands enough knowledge to know when you should walk away from a deal, and the only way to ensure that in the financial world is through financial literacy.
I look up to Galileo, I always have. He knew something that went against the standard belief of his time, and he was steadfast in holding on to what he knew was correct. I always seek to have that same level of courage when I am convinced of a position. The other admirable thing is that he went where the evidence led him. Too often people take a position that they are unwilling to let go of, even in the face of overwhelming evidence against their position. I always hope to have the courage to admit when I'm wrong, even at the risk of being called a flip-flopper.
I believe I would be a successful officeholder because I treat the experiences of all people very seriously, while maintaining the appropriate balance. I believe in making sure you understand what the issue is that government is being asked to resolve as opposed to what are the symptoms, and I am steadfast that the issue be defined before a solution is decided upon. A serious issue with politicians is that they try to fit their policy goal in as a solution to every problem that comes forward. That is antithetical to good governance and it is antithetical to my philosophy of governance.
The core responsibilities for someone elected to the Georgia House of Representatives are 1) Be mindful that you are doing the best you can for your constituents, 2) Remember that your decisions affect not just your constituents, but the entire state... don't engage in zero sum legislation, 3) You are elected to make the best decision you can, not simply give in to the pressure of the electorate. Courage to do the right thing must always be at the center of any elected official.
My favorite book is The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It was the first "adult" book I read and even at the young age when I read it, I found it to be hilarious. I will go back to it even now when I want a dose of dry humor.
I would want to be Mark Baum from the movie "The Big Short." He wasn't afraid to ask the indelicate question, unafraid to call BS, and even with all the qualities of a jerk, had enough compassion in him to always seek to do the right thing.
A Better Place to be -- Harry Chapin
I do believe that it is beneficial for legislators to have experience in that particular office. Each political office requires a different set of skills that often can only be obtained through experience in that role, though occasionally there is proxy experience. When going to a new office, proxy experience can be helpful but as far as effectiveness in office, nothing beats actual experience.
The greatest challenge facing Georgia in the next decade is making the smoothest transition possible as we transform into a majority-minority state. The change in almost inevitable and the transformation must be made without resistance, despite the historical context associated with one culture losing power.
I would want to be part of Banks & Banking, Ways and Means, Budget and Fiscal Affairs and Science and Technology. My career has been in Banking (almost 25 years) so I have a firm understanding of the banking and finance industries. Being a CPA, my inclusion in either of Ways and Means, which determines how to fund the government, and Budget and Fiscal Affairs, which watches spending vs. budget, are natural fits. I am a strong proponent of investment in Science and Technology so ensuring that Georgia is near the top destinations for Science and Tech is a priority to me.
