Biography
Jason Cox was born in Houston, Texas. He earned a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University in 1994 and a law degree from the University of Houston Law Center in 2002.[1]

Judges of the probate courts are elected in partisan elections by the county they serve and serve four-year terms, with vacancies filled by a vote of the county commissioners.[2]
Qualifications
To serve on a county court, a judge must:[2]
- be at least 25 years old;
- be a resident of his or her respective county for at least two years; and
- have practiced law or served as a judge for at least four years preceding the election.

|Judge Cox is the Judge of Harris County Probate Court #3, a court with county-wide jurisdiction over probate and civil mental health cases. Probate Court #3 has courtrooms at the Harris County Courthouse as well as the Harris County Psychiatric Center and employs a staff of 20. By size and caseload, this Court is one of the largest in Texas. Judge Cox is one of the highest rated judges in Harris County and has won awards for public service in the legal community. Prior to being elected in 2018, Judge Cox worked as an attorney for 15 years specializing in probate, where he was a frequent writer and speaker. He was also a longtime adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas in Houston where he taught pre-law classes to students who were among the first in their families to attend college. A pediatric and adult cancer survivor, Judge Cox is also a longtime volunteer at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where he has been recognized for contributions to patient support.
- Judge Cox believes in public service and treats everyone who comes before the Court with courtesy, dignity and respect.
- Judge Cox believes in innovation, and has worked with a number of agencies and organizations to create new programs that have expanded mental health services in Harris County.
- Judge Cox has worked to improve Texas' probate laws by serving on State committees focused on making courts more accessible.
His court is efficient, fair, and treats all who come before it with dignity and respect. These qualities are reflected in his recent ratings in the Houston Bar Association’s Judicial Evaluation Poll, which were among the highest in the County.
