An effort in Stonecrest, Georgia, to recall Mayor Jason Lary was initiated in August 2021. Petitions were filed on August 25, 2021.[1] Recall organizers failed to submit enough signatures to put the recall election on the ballot.[2]
Recall supporters
The recall was initiated by Stonecrest resident Richard Stone in response to a report submitted by City Attorney Winston Denmark on April 12, 2021, that found evidence of pandemic relief funds being misused. Denmark's report alleged that federal CARES Act funds were used to enrich city employees and their business associates. Missionary Baptist Church, where Lary serves as a Deacon, received a $150,000 grant without submitting an application.[3]
Recall opponents
Lary responded to the city attorney report, saying, "I wasn’t involved in the decision of the COVID funds administration or who received what awards."[3]
