Campaign website
Smith-Cook's campaign website stated the following:
PUBLIC SAFETY
Public safety is much more than another campaign buzzword.
Raleigh is a rapidly growing city experiencing unforeseen societal and social change. While much effort has been put into reducing major crime categories, there is still much to do. Raleigh's public safety officers deserve strong crime resilience from elected officials representing their communities. Jevon strongly supports funding police and fire agencies.
HOUSING AFFORDABILITY
A tale of two cities.
Home Ownership and Renting Hardships
While Raleigh's housing affordability index remains lower than many similar "tech hub" cities, home prices are still nearly 40% higher than pre-pandemic levels. This dynamic creates favorable conditions for moderate- to high-income earners but strains and widens disparities for lower-income families. Renters face even more significant challenges as rent price hikes make saving for a home seem impossible.
TRANSIT AND TRAFFIC
Raleigh is the fastest growing metro in North Carolina.
The bulk of residents depend heavily on automobiles as their primary means of transportation. Due to the aforementioned cost-of-living increases, many commute to work on roads designed for far less traffic. While GoRaleigh is a fantastic and sustainable alternative, there is still much work to be done to remove the stigma around public transportation and improve its perceived safety. Additionally, cyclists ' and pedestrians' safety is critical to Raleigh's holistic community vision.
CITY EMPLOYEE JOB SATISFACTION
Raleigh's more than 7,000 employees dedicate their time, attention and effort on keeping our city thriving, safe, and welcoming to both residents and visitors alike.
They deserve a fair, equitable, and secure work environment. Our GoRaleigh Transit workers, ground maintenance teams, parks and tourism employees, public safety officers (police/fire), administrative support divisions, and all who call Raleigh their employer are counting on the Raleigh City Council as a whole to provide a world-class work experience.
ENVIRONMENTAL RESILIENCE
Make no mistake about it....Raleigh is beautiful.
The landscape of oak and pine trees, coupled with its historic 19th-century architectural styling, makes the city a marvel of history and modern beauty. The influx of new residents and visitors will require continued persistence to ensure these attributes remain. Pressures on storm and flood water management systems will increase over time. Raleigh's transition into a more urbanized metro area requires innovative approaches to environmental resilience.
