I have the experience to be an effective advocate for parents, students, teachers, and citizens. I taught high school math and computer science in Granite School District for 20 years. I then transitioned to being an advocate for public education for the next 17 years.

Through these experiences, I have gained the knowledge and understanding on what works in education. I can advocate with the State Board of Education and Utah State Legislature on behalf of Granite School District effectively. I understand how school finance works in the State of Utah and know how to maximize the use of funding as it flows into a school district. I want to use that knowledge to increase the funding Granite receives from the State. I also have worked closely with education policy. I have developed policy, read bills and worked to pass bills at the legislature. I have lobbied to improve bill and State Board rules. I understand the relationship between State law, Board rules, and District policy.

Both my wife and son attended and graduated from Granger High School and we have lived in this area for 38 years. Also, I began my teaching career at Valley Jr. High. I also speak Spanish.
  • I believe that parents and parental involvement is the key to a child's success in school. Reinforcing the importance of education at home conveys to children a good attitude about school and leads to them being successful. As a school board member, I would seek to support policies and programs to increase parent involvement in the schools. Additionally, find ways to provide more information to parents about what is happening in their children's schools.
  • Every student has the right to receive an education in a school and classroom where they feel safe and welcomed. Furthermore, every educator should have a safe and healthy working environment. This would be a focus more me as a school board member.
  • Every student should have the resources necessary to receive the education needed to pursue their goals. These goals could be college or other post secondary training in trades or other careers.
Funding of public education while minimizing the tax burden on taxpayers, especially those that are least able to pay. Tax structures need to be more progressive.
