Cherlin ran in the 2012 election for New York State Assembly District 9. He ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on September 13, 2012. Incumbent Joseph S. Saladino -- who also ran on the Conservative Party and Independence Party of New York State tickets -- ran against Richard W. Young in the Republican primary. He was defeated by Joseph S. Saladino in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[1][2][3]
