My name is Jay Shooster. I grew up in a large Jewish family in South Florida, where my upbringing instilled in me a deep appreciation for Jewish traditions and Holocaust education. My family’s support of the Jewish Federation and the Anti-Defamation League has fueled my commitment to combating antisemitism and all forms of hatred, extremism, and injustice.

I’ve spent my career as a consumer advocate where I took on major food companies that were misleading consumers about the safety and environmental impacts of their food products, and artificially inflating their prices due to their false claims.

My legal accomplishments, community involvement, and unwavering commitment to my personal values has positioned me to be a powerful force for positive change in the Florida Legislature. My work representing leading environmental, animal welfare, and labor rights organizations has been featured in major media outlets and has led to the removal of numerous misleading marketing claims.

Outside of my legal work, I have served as a volunteer and organizer with Moms Demand Action where I advocated for gun violence prevention in Tallahassee. I’m also a member of my local synagogue and serve as a co-chair of a program with the Anti Defamation League.

Guided by the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam (“healing the world”) I am also an advocate for living organ donation and I donated my kidney through the National Kidney Registry in 2019.
  • Reproductive Freedom I believe that Floridians should have the freedom to make their own decisions about abortion and pregnancy. I’m going to work hard to stop Tallahassee politicians from interfering with these deeply personal decisions that should be left to women and their doctors.
  • Property Insurance While extremist politicians in Tallahassee have focused on banning books and abortions , they have allowed the property insurance industry to take advantage of Floridians. Our legislature voted to give a billion-dollar-bailout to insurance companies. They made it easier for insurance companies to simply deny homeowners’ valid insurance claims. And after all of that, Floridians still pay the highest property insurance rates in the country. . As a consumer protection lawyer,I fought for years to hold corporations accountable for unfair business practices. As a legislator, I will continue to put Floridians first and work to get the property insurance crisis under control.
  • Gun Violence Prevention I believe our law enforcement agencies must have the ability to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and domestic abusers. We also need to make sure the police have the resources to solve gun-related crimes when they occur. That’s why I support common sense gun violence prevention measures including background checks for gun purchases, an assault weapons ban, and firearm safety courses. I oppose extreme policies like getting rid of Florida’s minimum age requirement for purchasing firearms and allowing 18-year-olds to buy assault rifles. Finally, I want to invest in affordable housing, mental health counseling, education, and job training to help address the root causes of crime.
I am deeply passionate about several key areas of public policy that affect everyday Floridians, such as protecting reproductive freedom and tackling the rising cost of living in Florida. I am also passionate about the regulation of AI in the state of Florida. As an Artificial Intelligence Policy Fellow at Florida Atlantic University, I am dedicated to ensuring that potentially transformative technologies like AI are proactively addressed. This means creating policies that promote safe and ethical AI development. And as a product of Florida public schools, from kindergarten through college, I want to make sure our education system positions our state to be a leader on the responsible innovation and deployment of artificial intelligence.
As an advocate who has won legal battles against some of the biggest companies in the U.S., I’ve developed the skills and courage to stand up to powerful interests when it’s necessary. But I’ve also learned how to negotiate and reach mutually-beneficial compromises when that’s possible. I really like learning from people and listening to multiple perspectives before making a decision. Overall, I think I can bring a helpful combination of independence, open-mindedness, and pragmatism to Tallahassee that will make me a successful legislator and public servant.
I believe that introducing, voting on, and advocating for and against legislation are the core duties of a member of the Florida State House. . I also believe that being present in the district, listening to concerns of constituents, and helping them engage with state agencies are essential parts of the job. And especially in this time, I believe that being a voice for civility and respect for the democratic process is a key responsibility for any public official.
I’d like to be known as someone who is kind, practical, and committed to effectively advocating for my constituents. I know too many people who are thinking about leaving their lifelong homes in the district because they don’t feel welcome in this state anymore. They are moms who are worried that their daughters might not be able to get an abortion if they need one. They are retirees who are worried about someone bringing a gun to their grocery store or their synagogue. They are parents who are afraid their kids will be demonized for being part of the LGBTQ community. More than anything, I’d like to be remembered as someone who helped all these people feel a little safer, more supported, and welcome in their community.

I also want to leave a legacy of finding bipartisan solutions to extremely important and neglected problems, and advocating for causes that don’t necessarily have a powerful interest group behind them. Through my work, I hope I can play a small role in fighting extremism in our politics and fostering a more collaborative atmosphere.
I distinctly remember the news coverage surrounding the Oklahoma City bombings when I was around five years old.
Periodically, over the years, when my family’s business was short-staffed, I would help answer the phones and take messages from customers.
My favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird because it left me feeling inspired to advocate for justice and compassion.
I’ve Just Seen a Face by The Beatles.
My number one priority and concern is working hard to be elected as the next State House Representative for District 91, to be able to address the needs and concerns of my community.
I’ll never forget the first time I heard from a resident of the district that they were planning to remove the mezuzah from their home, in order to avoid becoming the target of anti-Jewish hate crimes. Sadly, I have since heard numerous similar stories from my fellow Jewish neighbors who have taken steps to avoid being identified as Jewish out of fear of violence and discrimination. I think about it every day as I work to combat antisemitism and all forms of hatred.
I am currently endorsed by Congressman Jared Moskowitz, Congresswoman Lois Frankel, State Senators Tina Polsky and Lori Berman, State Representatives Joe Casello and Kelly Skidmore, Boca Raton City Council members Yvette Drucker and Andy Thomson, as well as SEIU Florida, Women’s Issues NOW PAC, Equality Florida Action PAC, The Florida Planned Parenthood PAC, The Palm Beach County Human Rights Council Voters Alliance, The Palm Beach Treasure Coast AFL-CIO, the Palm Beach County Classroom Teachers Association, and I have been labeled a Mom's Demand "Gun Sense" Candidate.
As a consumer protection lawyer, I have taken on big corporations and will do the same against insurance companies. One of my top committee choices would be the Insurance & Banking Subcommittee, where I can leverage my expertise in holding powerful entities accountable and advocate for stronger protections and fair practices for consumers all over Florida.
