Court

The Jay Town Court is one of many other trial courts in Essex County, New York. This court has jurisdiction over vehicle and traffic matters, small claims, evictions, civil matters and criminal offenses. The court is located within the 4th Judicial District and the 3rd Judicial Department.[1]

In October 2013, voters of Jay passed a referendum which eliminated the second seat of this court. The absence of a major highway through the town reportedly yields a relatively light case load for judges, so in the well-attended election citizens voted for the measure 245 to 148. Said Town Supervisor Randy Douglas, "I am pleased. We’re constantly looking for ways to save taxpayer dollars, and this is one way to do it.” The term of Judge Robert Minogue was set to expire later that year, and though an election was held to fill the position it turned out to be merely a formality.[2]
