Jeanette Schade is a mother of 3 and grandmother to 1. She is a 23 year veteran in the educational field as a teacher's aide, substitute teacher, certified classroom teacher (K-12) with additional certifications in ESL and administration. Teaching in three different states and in rural, urban, and suburban schools has afforded Jeanette a diverse background in her teaching career that is unlike any other. She is passionate about learning and teaching others. She is also a world-wide traveler which has helped to expand her cultural lens.
- We need to get our classrooms open for a full 5 days for all students who have the desire to return to in person learning. The data and scientific evidence are there to show that kids do not spread the virus as readily to their peers or other adults. All teachers have had the opportunity to get vaccinated, and the CDC has lowered the spacing to 3 ft. There is no excuse to keep our children locked out of the schools any longer. They need to go back for their social, emotional, mental, and academic health.
- Political and social ideologies have been plaguing our schools, and with the COVID lockdowns and schools entering the homes, we have seen this more than ever. We need to get back to the basics of learning which are reading, writing, and arithmetic in addition to music and art. It is kids over politics and building back basics to get our schools back to being safe havens of learning.
- Beaverton School District has an 86% graduation rate which is low. For the Latino population it is 77% based on 2018-19 graduation numbers before COVID hit. In order to counter these low numbers, we need to build up the current career and technical education program. As we do this, we can retain more students for graduation and we can also help them obtain employable skills so they can immediately become contributing members of society upon graduation.
I have been politically involved for many years on many different issues, but the most important public policies have to do with education. We need to ensure our students are receiving the best education possible at the best price possible. With public education being funded by hard worked tax dollars, we need to make sure we put that money to good use and get as much of it as possible to the classroom rather than administration and other areas that do not ensure a safe learning experience for our future generations.
I look up to Martin Luther King Jr. because he taught unity, dignity, and to respect oneself and all of our fellow men. In this day and time when the world is trying to teach critical race theory that is racist in and of itself, we need more people like Martin Luther King Jr's teachings in our day to help keep us unified and moving forward with the opportunities of equality as enshrined in our United States Constitution. We need to judge a person by the content of their character and not an immutable quality like skin color. We are all diverse in our own ways through our talents, skills, aspirations, and dreams. Skin color has no space in the content of one's character, nor in what diverse skills and talents they bring to the table.
To Kill a Mockingbird because Scout had to learn many hard lessons by experiencing or witnessing some of the harshest treatment of individuals, but in the end, she learned to be a very compassionate and empathetic person. Her father was the epitome of a person who stood by his moral ground even when the heat was turned up.
A person who has excellent communication skills as she will be interacting with the public on a daily basis. A person with high integrity that will act when she says she will act rather than pandering to her constituents. A person who values students and their educational journey and who understands the joys and hardships of the educational process. A person who stands up to social and political pressures by standing by her morals and values.

Tasmanian Devil as he has such ferocious passion, but will stop to ensure one is doing well.
There are several jobs of a school board member:
1) They are the boss of the superintendent. They can hire and fire the superintendent.
2) They approve or disapprove of the curriculum that will be taught in our classrooms.
3) They approve the district's budget.
4) Lastly, they make or repeal policy that all district personnel, students, and parents must abide by. My constituents are the students, parents, and the tax paying citizen.
I have an open door policy. I had this as a teacher and I will have this as an elected school board member. Communication with parents, students, teachers, and the public is important to have when decisions need to be made that affect a large swath of individuals.
As stated above, communication is key to building any relationship. It is important that I am available through phone, email, or in person to assist students, parents, and community members with the triumphs and the concerns they may have. Students are my number one concern as the school board makes many decisions to ensure they have a safe and effective learning environment by passing policy or approving curriculum that affects them the most.
Having a diverse work force is very important. The school board does not partake in any hiring processes except for the superintendent. However, I will encourage hiring people based on their merits and not just an immutable quality like skin color. We will ascertain a very diverse work force in doing so. We can have a very diverse work force through the talents and skills the person possesses. It is important to have teachers who can relate to their students rather than being disconnected from them. Skin color should not be the only decision in hiring someone and unfortunately we have succumbed to that in this day and time.
Political and social ideologies get in the way of a quality education. When we are indoctrinating our children to become activist or to judge people by skin color, or to deconstruct their identity, then we have some serious issues in the educational field. We need to create safe havens of learning, not divisiveness where students do not feel they have a voice. Creating critical thinkers who can work through problems with sound solutions is what we need to teach in schools, not social justice, collectivism, equity, and other critical race theory buzz words. We can do this by implementing sound and accurate curriculum and passing excellent policies.
This is a loaded question as there are many approaches to teaching which are effective to the students' learning. When a teacher has the students' best interests in mind, has open communications with parents and students, employs excellent classroom management skills, and can engage students in their every day learning without sharing their political or social stances then that constitutes good teaching. This can be measured through various means such as surveys, observation, and the overall vibe in the classroom. Advanced teaching approaches are very important as they allow students to excel in various areas rather than having a one-size fits all approach. We need more advance classes for those students who are ready for them.
I would like to expand the career and technical education program in the Beaverton School District. Currently, BSD has a limited number of CTE courses at each high school, but if we can get these course plus others into each high school which would expand access to these courses that provide valuable skills and job training then we will be able to retain more students for graduation, and they would be able to get a job right out of high school to support whatever their next endeavors are. We need more CTE classes like cosmetology, welding, wood working, medical billing, computer graphics and deign, cyber security, and more. We can partner with community leaders in business to help fund and promote these programs. We can also reallocate money in the budget to support these programs.
Since schools work on hard earned tax payer dollars, it is important that we utilize this money in the most efficient way as possible. We need to ensure that more dollars are flowing to the classroom and not frivolous programs or administrative overhead. We need to get back to the basics of what schools truly need and how we can make the dollar work within those needs. With Oregon voters passing Measure 5 and Measure 50 some years ago, they have abdicated local control of taxes allocated for schools to the state who then redistributes that money. This has created some issues for BSD; however, there are grant programs that can be utilized to receive more money. In the end, it is how we allocate the money to give our kids the best possible education using the hard earned tax payers dollars the most efficiently.
Safety in schools is perhaps my number one goal. Without safety, it is very difficult for a child to learn. In reading over the BSD SRO report, the SRO program provides not only safety on our school campuses, but it also allows for students to bond and build relationships with local police through the various programs they provide on school campuses. We also need to make sure that our administrative staff are hiring qualified candidates for the position in which they applied, and they do not have any adverse backgrounds that would create unsafe environments for learning. Lastly, the teacher and staff evaluation system is a way to assess the safety of our schools by observing classrooms and other areas where learning occurs.
Mental health needs are ever increasing especially after the 1.5 school year lock out. We need to ensure there are social workers and trained counselors and therapists on hand to handle any situation that may arise for any student or staff member. A school support system needs to be built in on each campus, so when a teacher needs to reach our for support that they have it without quesiton. This is the same for students and other staff as well.
Well we have seen over this last 1.5 school years just how important technology is for educating our students at home. As a society, I think we learned that we need to build more infrastructure to be ready for any catastrophic event that may occur. We need to have stable and reliable internet even for those who cannot afford it. We need hardware and software that will support the education of students both in and out of the brick and mortar building. We need to have a strategic plan in place for another event like what we went through that has student, parent, and community input.
See the above response about the role of technology in schools.
Parents and guardians are an integral part of their children's educational experience. Helping parents from all backgrounds is very important. Communication is key as well. Without regular communication it is hard to build any type of relationship. As a school board member, I will encourage parents to attend the school board meetings and submit public comment. I will also encourage them to attend their children's school functions and be more involved in their children's educational experience.
