My name is Jeanne-Marie Burrows, and I am running for Aspen Peaks School Board seat 6. I am a proud wIfe and mother of 4 children. have volunteered in the schools in my area for twelve years. During that time I have been on four School Community Councils (SCC) and PTA boards at every level of schools, and I just finished a two year position as Lehi Council PTA President. Volunteering in schools has become not only my passion, but also my lifestyle. Running for school board is the next step in showing the teachers, parents and students in the area that I am committed to helping them. I have a masters degree in Special Education and have worked in helped children with behavior problems off and on over the years.
  • I would love to be know as the school board member that showed up for our students, teachers and communities. I do that in my life already every day and continue to learn from just being where our students are learning. Being present in schools and communicating with students and teachers help me know where we need improvements and what is working well. Giving time to our community members to explain our goals and how education (funding, process, etc) works will help them feel more invested. My hope is that when we can all feel that we are working together and are on the same team, our students can achieve even better greatness.
  • Helping out teachers feel like they have opportunities to collaborate and learn is very important to me. Supporting our teachers this way and helping them have time and experience for collaboration and professional development will not only help our teachers, but it will also help our students.
  • I will always be passionate about helping every child succeed. Every child is different and has different needs. Making sure we have adequate support and funds for Special Education, advanced learners, and programs in our secondary schools that help students explore and learn many ways of learning is important to me. The arts and technology are also important. Our state code and cores help guide us academically, but we have an opportunity to give our students the best experiences to thrive at school and learn to love it.
With a bachelors degree in Psychology, I will always be drawn to student teacher well-being. Having a masters degree in Special Education, I will always be drawn to not only teacher supports, but also in student access and equality.
My mom will always be my hero and example. She is the most giving and service oriented person I know.
The most important characteristics of an elected official are integrity, personable and knowledgeable of the position they will have.
The core responsibilities of a school board member, especially during this election, is to help choose the best superintendent and business administrator to ensure a smooth and successful transition to the new school district. Creating a vision and goals to support that success and helping with policy and curriculum decisions to anchor our new district. We also have the great responsibility to be a bridge to our communities. Communicating with them, getting to know them and their needs will always be important.
I would love to be known as someone who is a helper. Someone who sees a need and does what she can to help.
I was 11-years-old when the Iraq War started. My dad had taught history and current events, so we watched the news every morning. Knowing we were entering a war was a very solemn morning.
I grew up in a small town of 1,000 people, so jobs were hard to come by! The summers before my Junior and Senior years, I was hired to be an aide for summer school at the elementary school.
I feel like most of my strengths now were once a weakness. I have worked my whole life to not be my own worst critic and to believe in myself.
Our district will have diverse needs, but belonging to a smaller school district will help us be able to concentrate better on those needs. Having the smaller amounts of students and teachers in the district, we can focus not only on the needs, but also the strengths. I believe having more input from teachers and community members, can help us develop and strengthen programs that will support our students in the best ways possible.
Our state has clear expectations on safety that districts need to follow. I do now and would continue to push for more funding to help implement new policies put into place, so we do not have to take away money from other priorities to fund them.
Mental health has always been fascinating to me, but it has become extremely important since we all started seeing the effects of the pandemic. Being proactive in supporting our teachers and students in this aspect will help our student success. Having adequate professionals in our schools is key, followed by training our teachers how to help students and themselves in stressful situations will help them.
I have chosen to focus my endorsement efforts on those directly associated with schools. Alpine Education Association has endorsed me along with multiple teachers, students and parents. Those can all be found on my website or Facebook page.
Building relationships with parents is key to me. With smaller areas in each seat, we are able now to get to know many people. I am planning on being in each school in my seat weekly, showing up for community events and planning my own community events that help communicate our district needs and strengths. I don’t want to rush through conversations or speak in acronyms that our parents don’t know, but I truly want them each know how education works and how they can help and get involved.
