|- Public safety and integrity remain top priorities. To address public safety concerns, we need to support our law enforcement agencies from the city level up to the federal level. At the city level, we must ensure they have current training and the necessary equipment to do their jobs. Develop quality working relationships with area agencies. Maintain SROs in our schools year-round. Establish a public safety committee composed of citizens, businesses, schools, colleges, council members, and law enforcement agencies to develop and implement plans for integrating law enforcement into our communities, fostering proactive rather than reactive responses.
- 2. Affordable housing/property taxes Affordable housing is typically defined as when occupants spend no more than 30% of their income on mortgage, rent, utilities, and property taxes. Currently, the average Greensboro resident spends between 30% and 50%, and with our annual rising taxes, homeowners and renters are wondering how they will continue affording their homes or keep them. We need to review and adjust our budgets before raising taxes. Guilford County pays higher property taxes than comparable counties in our state, despite having a significantly lower income bracket.
- 3. Veteran/family support "Freedom isn’t Free" is not only a saying for memes and t-shirts. It is born from the backbone of about 1% of America’s current population. We are losing our history every day as our older Veterans and their families pass away. We need to support efforts to document this history. Many of our retired and medically retired veterans live below the poverty line while raising families, tending to their medical needs, and their caregivers may or may not be able to work outside the home. Creating local networks of support, from assisting with respite care, mowing lawns and handyman tasks to addressing major needs, this support is vital for mental health.
Supporting Parks and Rec as they continue to develop and grow in providing services for all ages. To include partnering with nonprofits to expand services.
Develop a clear communications plan for constituents to contact you and for you to respond.
Always show kindness and respect to staff and constituents, creating a welcoming environment for everyone. Respect city employees’ time. Provide positive reinforcement generously.
Be ready to handle incivility when it happens.
Spend time familiarizing yourself with the functions and departments in your local government.
Show humility by acknowledging you don’t have all the answers. Have a plan to reach them once you find the answer.
Act as a knowledgeable and trustworthy representative of municipal communications.
