Jeff Varela was a 2016 Democratic candidate for District 48 of the New Mexico House of Representatives.[1]

Varela's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Public Employees and Retirees:
- State, County, and Municipal public employees provide the fundamental services to our communities and are contributors to our workforce, our economy and to our quality of life. We need to invest in their training, development and compensation in recognition of their value. This includes recognition and respect of the collective-bargaining process while improving ethics in public employment and public office.
Senior Citizens:
- State Government should provide adequate funding to support senior citizen programs and services through the NM Aging and Long-Term Care Department. Senior Citizens should be provided quality health and wellness care, including home assisted and facility care! Our senior citizens provide our communities with wisdom, experience, knowledge and are contributors to our economy. We must maintain the necessary services and assistance they need to ensure them a good quality of life, security and accessibility to affordable, quality health care.
Children & Their Education:
- Public education should be the first choice for parents and their children. Too long we have debated, argued and exhausted ourselves over how much and how to spend public dollars on our children’s education. We need a reality check and adjustment as to how we define our public school system; how we fund public education; and what we are going to measure in regards to student academic success. We should focus on funding our public schools through a bottom-up approach (classroom, students, teachers), instead of the top-down approach (administration, management, specialists). Funding the layers of administration and management positions at the school district levels, leaves very little dollars that trickle down to the classrooms, students and teachers.
Veterans & The Disadvantaged:
- While at war abroad this requires the continued sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. While supporting our troops in service, we must remember and commit necessary resources to those who return from service and become veterans. Veterans require our commitment as much as when they were in active service by providing quality health care; tuition-free education; job training and placement; and affordable housing.
Local Business & Commerce:
- Improving our state and local economy requires investment in our businesses created by New Mexicans. This should be addressed by streamlining our laws and regulations and providing investment for local business allowing them to develop and succeed. In turn, New Mexico will benefit through consumer taxes and sustainable employment for the workforce.[2]
