I will bring an organizer’s skills to the House Democratic Caucus. This is a critical need because – for 3 decades – GOP strategists have assailed the very notion of government working to improve our lives. In a cynical partnership with rich mega-donors, these extremists promote the noxious view that government holds back freedom-loving Americans. We know that this is nonsense. For the past century, Congress has protected consumers and small business owners from predatory practices which inevitably arise in a free-enterprise system. It has been frustrating, then, to see no push-back from Democratic office-holders – it’s not like we lost a debate, we didn’t even show up! This is not that difficult. Every month there are several opportunities to drive home the message that government is working to help American workers and business-owners. For example, late-January, 2018 Ayer-based AMSC won a huge $800mil verdict against a Chinese company which a U.S. jury found guilty of stealing trade secrets (wind turbine technology). Not one member of Congress hailed the Economic Espionage Act of 1996; as a consequence, no local or regional news coverage. Similarly, December, 2017: Keppel Offshore & Marine and SBM Offshore agreed to pay the U.S. Justice Dept a combined $660mil in Foreign Corrupt Practices Act penalties; $8.7bil total (Justice + SEC) since 2007. FCPA legislated during Carter years. Lost cases should be even easier to publicize! Late-January, 2018: Imagine that a Delaware court held Wal-Mart’s directors blameless in a case about tens of millions of dollars in bribes paid to local Mexican officials. The case was brought by the pension funds of Teachers, Electrical Workers (&c.) – main allies of the Democrats, of course. Don’t you think that they would have appreciated a member of Congress inviting them to a D.C. press conference to denounce this travesty? Democrats have made little or NO effort to explain how government helps and how laws protect us, leaving the door wide open for anti-government zealots like Bannon, Norquist, the Koch brothers, the Mercers & their ilk! Should America act to rein-in corruption which puts honest U.S.-based corporations at a disadvantage in the global economy? No, says President Trump, talking about the FCPA (“a horrible law”); a level playing field for him, apparently, would allow our companies to bribe as well. (An implicit admission of his own commercial behavior?) In normal times, citizens of the 3rd District would assess candidates based on perceived legislative acumen or a strong policy profile; these are not normal times![1][2] |
