|I am an introverted nerd and a policy wonk, but I chose to run for office because I am deeply concerned about the direction that our country is headed, and I am not willing to stand on the sidelines and watch.
I believe that a willingness to work hard and make something of yourself should be all you need to succeed. I believe that our government should work for all of us, not a small elite. And I know that making these beliefs a reality requires us to hold elected leaders accountable for their shortcomings and take every step possible to create a more just, more equitable future where we live up to our values of "liberty and justice for all".- Our democracy is at a critical point. We need to take every measure possible to restore confidence in our voting system, and our government’s ability to handle issues across party lines, so that we can move forward as one people. Maryland is a leader in protecting voting rights, but our votes still do not count equally across the board. It is time to adopt statewide ranked-choice voting to ensure that everyone has a chance to vote for who they actually want, not just the lesser of two options they don’t like. It is time to require open primaries and allow the 20% of unaffiliated Marylanders to be heard. It is time to make drawing district maps a non-partisan activity that empowers regular voters instead of established politicians.
- Maryland is one of the most at-risk states for the climate crisis with historic flooding already affecting Annapolis, Baltimore, and Ellicott City. Our state ought to be the national leader on addressing and preparing for the effects of the climate crisis. We have a unique opportunity due to our diverse economy, well educated work force, and critical geography at the heart of the Chesapeake. Achieving these goals means pursuing carbon neutrality aggressively, creating barriers for the worst polluters, and supporting vulnerable communities. All while funding job skill programs and investing in green industry to build a stronger middle class built on good, stable jobs.
- Equality of opportunity starts with education. I want to live in a future where every child born, regardless of their parents' financial situation, has equal access to a high quality education. Our education system is under incredible stress that must be relieved. Working with educators to address the most pressing issues within our schools and implementing policy that creates safe communities where students have the conditions they need to succeed is one of my top priorities. I plan to do this by addressing chronic under-funding of schools in disadvantaged communities, supporting systemic improvements by implementing the blueprint, and establishing more bridges of opportunity to trade schools and college.
