The "R" word ban case
In 2007, Judge Cheuvront received national attention over for barring a rape victim from saying "rape" in a sexual assault trial, while allowing defense attorneys to use words such as "sex" and "intercourse." A mistrial was declared in the defendant's first trial when the jury deadlocked. The second trial failed to advance beyond jury selection when Cheuvront declared a mistrial, citing news coverage and public protests on Bowen's behalf. A federal lawsuit filed in 2007 in Lincoln contends that Cheuvront violated the victim's rights of due process and free speech by banning the words "rape," "sexual assault," "victim" and "assailant" from testimony in the November 2006 trial of alleged assailant Pamir Safi.[5][6]
Judicial Qualifications Commission
Judge Cheuvront was appointed to serve on the Nebraska Judicial Qualifications Commission on October 9, 1998. He was re-appointed in 2001, 2005 and 2009 and his term ended on March 31, 2013.[7]
